Continuing their legacy of excellence, the Wayzata Girls Soccer Team is making waves with their domination in the 2025 season.
The girls launched the season with an amazing match against Roger’s High School. They demonstrated their individual skills and remarkable teamwork and secured a win with a final score of 3-1. From that moment on, the season has become a series of triumphs for the team, with every match reinforcing their skill and determination.
In previous years, the girls have always shown outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship, qualities that have led them to many successes. Last season, the team celebrated a significant milestone when they achieved their eighth win in the Minnesota state championships for girls’ soccer, their first win since 2012. The team is set out to make that happen again this year.
This year, the team is determined not to let it take as long to achieve that goal, though it may prove more difficult. This year the team is composed of eleven registered sophomores and eight upperclassmen. “Especially since we have 11 sophomores so we are younger, but we’re coming along okay, we’re doing some very nice things and there’s obviously still room for improvement, and the potential looks very good.” said varsity team coach Tony Pesznecker
The team acknowledges that it will be more challenging to reach the same standard as last year, with most of the key players having graduated from the team.“It will be hard to do it again, but I feel like we have a really good chance, and we are all really good as a team and all really good friends,” said Lauren Craig, a player on the team in an interview.
The team’s main rival schools are Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Providence Academy, both of which are consistently ranked top in the state for Girls’ Soccer. Last year in a challenging match-up against Providence Academy, the Wayzata girls faced a tough defeat with a loss of 5-0. However this year, the girls are fueled with determination and confidence that they will secure a victory.
Their current ranking is number one in the state as of now. But that doesn’t mean that they are left without challenges.“We have a lot of new players and there are a lot of really good seniors that graduated last year, and it has been kind of hard to recover from that.” said Craig. So far, with the help of their upperclassmen teammates, the younger players seem to be doing extremely well.
The players have said that their main goal this season is to reach the same level they were on last year, but not only that. They aspire to also build up together as a team, especially with all of the new underclassmen, and get stronger with the team, and build lifelong bonds.
When describing the team goals Craig said that they wanted to win state, but also build up together as a team. This really shows the team’s dedication to one another and how much they prioritize getting along outside of soccer.
The girls are currently at the midpoint of the 2025 season and enjoying an impressive record of 10 game wins and 0 losses. Last year at the same point in the season, the girls had 9 wins and 1 loss meaning that this year they are doing better than last year.
Their current performance not only highlights their dedication and skill on the field, but also shows their determination and teamwork that has helped them to surpass last year’s achievements.
As the season continues, the girls are pressured to start thinking and preparing for sections and state championships. Sections and groupings of schools within a state that compete against each other, and state championships are tournaments at the high school level to determine which team gets the title of best team in the state.
The most recent highlights for the girls’ team include their smashing victory against Mankato West, in a non-conference match on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
This victory extended the team’s undefeated winning streak and boosted their season record to 10-0-2. Wayzata used their strong defensive strength which prevented Mankato West from scoring any goals, giving them a dominant winning score of 9-0.
They also achieved a victory against Minnetonka on September 17, 2025, the only other undefeated team up until then. They secured their third win in a row and continued building on their 9-1-1 record.
This match was a repeating highlight for the Minnesota high school because it often determines the top contenders in the Lake conference and further up. The Lake conference is a premier high school conference in Minnesota, where both teams often compete against each other.
In all of their winning games, there seems to be one consistent factor that sets Wayzata’s team apart and helps them to come out on top. “ Our entire program we do so much stuff together you know…so I think there’s a good camaraderie and a good bonding within the program,” said Pesznecker. This shows how much Wayzata truly cares about its team and working together as one.
As the girls continue to showcase their amazing skills and attempt to remain undefeated, Wayzata will be here cheering them on and rooting for their success. Hopefully, with enough support, the girls will be able to secure their ninth win in the Minnesota state championships and prove whether or not they really are the best team out there.
