Wayzata High School has updated its tardiness policy, and students should be aware of the changes. Any student arriving after the bell without a verified pass will be marked tardy, and those arriving more than ten minutes late will be marked absent. However, students may obtain a tardy slip from the attendance office. Like always, tardiness will first be addressed in a classroom but once a student exceeds three unverified tardies for any class, further action is taken. This year, when a student reaches their fifth unverified tardy, they will be referred to the Dean of Students. If a sixth unverified tardy is obtained, the Dean may assign consequences such as a one day suspension. If the student is suspended, a meeting will be held to discuss the students ability to regain trust for getting to class on time. Meaning, students may return to class on a probationary status. Some students think that this new policy is obtainable. For example, after an interview with Riya Baride, she stated that “since we get 10 minutes of passing time, it should be easy to get to your classes on time. However, I believe that suspension with just six tardies is a little too harsh.” Contradicting Baride’s statement, we have Aleena Sikka who thought that “it’s silly as some kids cannot get to class on time for certain reasons. The bathrooms are always packed during passing time and sometimes students can walk at slow paces.” With mixed opinions among students the effectiveness of the new policy is not clear yet. It is known that arriving on time will prevent unnecessary consequences. Ultimately, it is important to stay aware of the rules and use passing time wisely for success.
